Install Remote Coral

Before we begin

This is a guide that installs Remote Coral only.  Remote Coral uses Sun Microsystem's Java Web Start software, and can be run on a variety of platforms and operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Solaris, and Linux.  Note that prior to running remote Coral, you must establish a remote Coral password using local Coral.  This is done by logging in to local Coral using a Sunray appliance in one of the NFC labs, and from the Coral Equipment Client window, select the Window pull-down menu, and click on the Remote Password link.  Once this is done, your remote Coral password is set up.

Install steps:

Installing Remote Coral

Windows {NT/2000/XP}, Solaris, and Linux

Download the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment from Sun Microsystems.  Click this link (Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition) to go to the Sun Microsystems page for this software.  Note that you only need to select the link on this page that says "Download JRE 5.0 Update nn".  The Java Runtime Environment includes everything that you need to run Remote Coral including Java Web Start.  You don't need the SDK (software developers kit), the enterprise edition (J2EE), or the version that is bundled with NetBeans.  Double-Click on the file you have just downloaded and install Java Web Start.

Macs

Coral is java based and should be platform independent.  However, the Coral team has only tested the previously mentioned platforms.  If you feel you are comfortable installing computer software and plan to install Coral on other platforms, here are the general guidelines.  Detailed instructions are not avaliable.  If you are successful running Remote Coral on other platforms, we would like to hear from you and share what you did with others.

Apple Computer supports java software (Apple java link).

Shortcuts

One way to get shortcuts for Coral Remote is to change a setting once the Java Runtime Environment has been installed.  Go to Start | Control Panel | Java.  When the Java Control Panel opens click on the Advanced tab at the top.  You should see a screen similar to this:

Click on the + in front of 'Shortcut Creation' and select 'Prompt User', then click on 'OK'.  During Coral Remote installation you should get a dialogue box asking if you want to create shortcuts.  Another way to create shortcuts once Coral Remote is already installed is given below.

First Time Running Coral

Follow this link: coral.nfc.umn.edu/coral/etc/coral.jnlp and the remote Coral installation should start with files being downloaded from the NFC server.

You should see the following dialog boxes (or something similar).

This is JWS downloading the Coral application. The size of the file is roughly 5mb.

This warning dialog box is asking if you want to trust Coral Remote (published by baldur.ece.umn.edu).  Click Run to continue.

This warning dialog box is also asking if you want to trust Coral Remote (Signed by The Legion of the Bouncy Castle).  You get a second warning because Remote Coral has two components to it.  Click Run to continue.

If you made the change to the java settings described above, this dialogue box will offer you the chance to create shortcuts.  If you don't create shortcuts at this time you can have them set up later by following instructions given below.

When Coral Remote has been successfully installed you should see this dialogue box as the application launches.

This is Coral's login window.  Use your NFC Coral username and remote password to login.  Note that Remote Coral is identical to local Coral, except that in Remote Coral you cannot change your remote password.

Adding Shortcuts When Coral Remote is Already Installed

If you already have Coral Remote installed and want to get shortcuts created, follow these instructions.  Go to Start | Control Panel | Java.

When the Java Control Panel opens click on the 'Settings' button in the 'Temporary Internet Files' section.

Next, click on the 'View Applications' button.

Right-click on the Coral Remote Application and select 'Install Shortcuts' from the menu that opens up.  Close the windows and the Java Control Panel.
